Blog Archive B-School Insider Interview Alumnus, INSEAD, Class of 2013 We recently had the chance to speak with an Italian alumnus of INSEAD (Class of 2013), who began his career as an engineer after specializing in civil and environmental engineering. Eager to start putting his training to use, he decided against pursuing a PhD and instead joined a large corporation, where he steadily rose to the level of general manager. Although he enjoyed the responsibility and excitement of managing a team and overseeing a number of large, cutting-edge projects for a global leader in the industry, he felt that he was ready for a change but needed a better grounding in business and finance to move in a new direction. The MBA program at INSEAD fit the bill. mbaMission: How did you come to decide you needed an MBA, and why did you target INSEAD? INSEAD Alumnus: At some point, I felt like I wanted to get more education and develop my finance skills more. I felt that I was lacking some of the most important skills that I believe are needed in the corporate world. So, you know, everything that goes with finance, marketing, sales, a lot of things that I didn’t study at university. I had lots of technical skills I developed as a leader, but I didn’t know a lot about finance and related topics. And also I wanted to try and move to potentially other industries, maybe do some entrepreneurship, maybe change totally my jobâ€"it could be entrepreneurship, could be consulting, could be banking. I didn’t know, but I wanted to try something different. The MBA sounded like a very good chance to step back a little bit, take a year off and try to look at things from the outside once again, develop skills, develop a network with people that came from different industries, different parts of the world. That was why I went for the MBA at that point. And my take was that I could go for two years in the U.S.â€"for me, the top two schools were Harvard [Business School] and Stanford [Graduate School of Business]â€"but I didn’t want to do that, because two years off, if you don’t get paid by your company, it’s too expensive. mbaMission: Sure. IA: So I decided to apply to INSEAD, and I later realized that actually I should have done that in the first place, because I found many more advantages from taking the MBA at INSEAD than I thought at the beginning. So in the beginning, I thought that INSEAD was not at the same level as Harvard and Stanford, because I was looking at schools in a very simple way: I was just considering the rankings in the Financial Times, this kind of stuff. But then when I started digging more, I realized that you cannot compare them, because they are different. You’re not talking about the same things. INSEAD maybe, from an academic point of view, it’s not at the same level as the top U.S. schools, but it doesn’t have the endowment that the top U.S. schools have either, because it’s a much younger school. On the other hand, INSEAD offers things that other schools don’t offer, and one is the fact that you can get an MBA in one year. And one year is not a discounted version of a two-year MBA. It’s actually a way of being efficient, a way of concentrating the most important things you need to learn in a time frame that in my view makes sense, because two years off, especially for people from Europe who approach an MBA typically at an older age than people in the U.S.â€" they have a master’s already, while people in the U.S. only have a bachelorâ€"two years is too much. So that’s one big advantage and one reason I found INSEAD interesting. And then I actually got some confirmation by talking with people who went to U.S. schools like Wharton [the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania], that in fact in two years, you get to repeat the same topics over and over again. And another big plus with INSEAD is that it’s very international, which is something I don’t believe any other school in the world can give to the same extent. mbaMission: Sure. IA: The amount of nationalities is unbeatable. I mean, there are people from basically everywhere, and it’s a mix of nationalities, industries, expertise, points of view. It’s just incredible. That’s one of the things that INSEAD offers and you cannot get anywhere else. And the third thing that was very important is INSEAD has an Asian campus in Singapore, and that is something that is only offered by INSEAD, if you look at the top schools. And to establish a network and be able to spend time in Asia, where basically you have professors and a lot of people that have connections with the Asian market and the Asian culture, is something you cannot get by being in the U.S. or in Europeâ€"you have to be in Asia. And that was the third reason why in the end I found INSEAD the best option for me. mbaMission: Sure. So did you spend part of your year on the Asian campus? IA: Yes. I started in Fontainebleau [France]. I spent there four months. The way it works is that you can spend a whole year in the same location, or you can decide to move around. So after the first four months, which are fixedâ€"the first four months, you cannot move, you just stay where you appliedâ€"then you can move, let’s say, from Fontainebleau to Singapore and then back to Fontainebleau, or you can do Fontainebleau and [then] Singapore, or you can even do Fontainebleau, Singapore, Wharton, Singapore, because you can do an exchange period with Wharton and Kellogg. mbaMission: That’s a lot of moving around in ten months. IA: You move around a lot. I decided to go to Singapore and stay there for six months, and there is a bidding system. You bid for courses and you bid for location using the same pool of points, and I took basically what they call a package to get six months in Singapore using very few points, so I was there until graduation. mbaMission: How does that work with respect to class cohesiveness? That’s one thing you hear a lot about with the U.S. schools. How do you create a tight-knit student body if you have people moving literally all around the world every couple of months? Are you still able to form close bonds with your classmates? IA: I agree that probably you manage to get better bonds with people with your liking at U.S. schools, because you probably are with the same people most of the time, and INSEAD is different. I think you can still bond a lot with certain people that have the same interestsâ€"you’re looking at the same industry or whatever. You can still become very good friends. I became very good friends with some, but I agree that it’s less fixed and it’s much more dynamic. The upside is you get to know many more people, especially if you move from one campus to another, but even if you stay on one campus, there are many [people] coming from the other campuses, and you get to know them, and you get to know people from Wharton and Kellogg as well because they visitâ€"actually more Wharton than Kellogg. So by moving around, one downside is that probably you don’t bond with so many people to the extent that you can bond in a U.S. school, but you get to know many more. And you continue having t he network afterwards. You can still chat with them. You can still meet up. I just had a few friends from INSEAD, actually, over to my vacation house. So it’s something that remains. mbaMission: Okay. So, how would you characterize your classmates? What kind of people are INSEAD students, would you say? IA: They’re international, from many different industries, with different interests, and very, very smart. So one thing that happened to me that had never happened to me before: when I was at university or when I was at my [pre-MBA] company, I was surrounded by colleagues, and some were smarter than me, some were less smart than me. So I used to be within a good mix. At INSEAD, I got humbled a lot because, you know, you are in this classroom, and basically everyone isâ€"or you perceive that everyone isâ€"smarter than you are, and it’s a very humbling experience. But I think this is not because it’s INSEAD; I think it’s the same at every top school, because they make a very tough filter at the beginning. mbaMission: Definitely. How effective did you feel the school’s curriculum was in helping you develop the skills you went to business school to gain? IA: Yeah. So at INSEAD, there is a well-known triangle: studying, partying, sleeping. And you cannot get all three, so you need to choose. And typically, people choose studying and partying, you know? So we don’t sleep, and that’s a matter of fact. I mean, it’s very fast paced, lots of group work, but it’s a very good mix, so it’s not focused on cases only. It’s a mix of cases, individual work, classes. It’s a very good mix, but it’s a very heavy load, because that’s the consequence of basically compressing everything into one year. mbaMission: I understand. So what kind of partying do INSEAD students do? Are these more informal types of things, or are there school events that everyone takes part in on a regular basis? IA: Mostly it’s informal. Of course, there are the usual school events, but mostly it’s informal, and it’s very different, actually, from campus to campus. So in Fontainebleau, it’s a very small city, where basically you are in the French forest. You have the campus, and then you have a lot of small houses around, so the social events are typically in people’s apartments, where people throw a party and then everyone goes there. And there are several parties at the same time, because you cannot fit everyone into the same apartment. Everything is planned on Facebook or via email. Singapore is veryâ€"well, it’s different. It’s a big city, and everything happens typically in Dover [Parkview] and Heritage [View]. These are the two main places where people take apartments. I was kind of an exception, because I took an apartment in a different place, but all the parties happened typically in Dover and Heritage. And then of course, in Singapore, there’s a better chance to go somewhere in the city, because Singapore is much, much bigger. In Fontainebleau, you can go to Paris, but even though people think that Paris is around the corner, it’s actually not so close, because transportation is not very efficient. mbaMission: How does housing work if people are moving every couple of months? Is there school housing, or do students kind of move in and out of each other’s apartments? IA: So this is probably a downside. There is no school housing. School doesn’t really help on housing, and the way it works, basically, you try to group and find something together. Again, Facebook is the main platform, and you connect with people fromâ€"well, I was a 13J, meaning graduating in July of 2013â€" and you try to reach those from the 12D or the 13D. So you connect with people that are finishing their program or are about to start. So there’s a lot of exchange through email, Facebook, etc. That’s how it works. mbaMission: Sure. That makes sense. Did you work with the school’s career development center? How did the recruiting experience go for you? IA: I haven’t really used recruitment services because at some point I decided I was looking into entrepreneurship, and I’m working on a couple of ventures. So at some point, I stopped taking care of the recruitment process, the formal recruitment process. I still took the chance to shoot a couple of emails to a few companies, do some networking. I went to a few events, but in general, I haven’t used the career service a lot. I know that people have very high expectations of career service, and they believe that if they get into a top school, then basically jobs will be offered to them, and they will just have to pick and choose, but that’s not the way it works. Typically, you need to network your way to a good job, though for some specific jobs like consulting, things are very structured. So consulting is extremely well structured, there are some very clear deadlines, there’s a clear path. If you want to go into consulting, then do this, this and that, and the consulting c ompanies are 100% aligned, and that’s a very well-known framework. If you look at other types of jobs, you typically need to network your way through. mbaMission: Have you already started a couple of ventures, or are you still in the process? IA: I started them. I’m working on a venture in [Asia], and I’m advising a start-up that is moving to the Silicon Valley later this year. I’m helping them on the final things, and maybe I will get a job with them soon, but right now, I’m enjoying this working from home, because I haven’t been home [in Italy] for many years. So I’m taking the chance to work from here and go to [Asia] every now and then. mbaMission: That’s great. What was your impression of the school’s faculty? IA: From an academic point of view, there are some top professors, who are just the best in their field and at the same level as professors from Harvard and Stanfordâ€"if not better, in some cases. So there are a few stars. Then there is a big chunk of very good professors, like, extremely good, not top, professors, but very good ones. So you get a very good learning experience from them. And then, of course, you have some disappointing professors, but that is something I learned that is the same in every school. I mean, you get some stars, and then you get some low performers. I don’t know the school policy, so I cannot say for sure what the policy is, but my impression is that they try to get the best for the most important topics. So, for example, in finance you can find some very, very good professors. For example, I had a professor, Antonio Fatas, who is a macroeconomics professor in Singapore; he’s a top guy who has been involved in a lot of organizations, such as the IMF and the World Bank, as well as with the EU Commission and the Fed. It was a fantastic learning experience, and I enjoyed the course a lot. It’s one of those courses where you say, okay, the fee is worth this course, because I got so much from it that I feel very well rewarded. I also had a negotiation professor, Horacio Falcao, who is a Brazilian professor and has a very different take on negotiation, which he calls value negotiation. He used to work with [Roger] Fisher, who was one of the most known negotiators in the world. And this guy is also incredible. I never had such an intense learning experience, and I was really amazed. And then another finance professor called Pierre Hillionâ€"French guy, extremely good, fantastic learning experience. I think I took up to six courses with him, a lot of electives, because I just found that this guy was amazing. In general, I think that probably at Harvard and Stanford, on average, you can probably get better professorsâ€"by better, I mean probably people that have more experience, they have been more involved with global organizations, etc.â€"but I think that is a consequence of the endowment, the fact that INSEAD is a very young school, and they don’t have as much money to spend on salaries. I think that that ’s one of the reasons. mbaMission: Sure. Did you have any interactions with the dean? IA: Yeah, we got a chance to chat with him. I think the dean is a great guy. We got to talk with him a few times, though of course that was limited to his availability. mbaMission: What resources outside the classroom would you say were the most helpful to you or the most interesting? Clubs or research centers or conferencesâ€"things like that. IA: To me, the most interesting thing has been the Entrepreneurs-in-Residence  program, which is something I looked into before INSEAD. When I finally started, I tried it out, and then basically every entrepreneur that was coming I was trying to get a spot and have a chat with. Some of these guys are really top guys, people who built large companies from scratch. Others are entrepreneurs in the sense that they have their own company or start-up, such as consultants or VCs [venture capitalists] or angels investing in start-ups. That was a very good experience, because you can get so much good feedback. You present to them your ideas, you tell them this is what I am thinking about and they’re very open. They can shoot it down. They can help you identify the most crucial aspects that you need to work on. They can give you some very good contacts. I got some very good contacts from these entrepreneurs in residence. Overall, that has been one of the things I used the most. Another thing I want to mention is the alumni network. I thought that basically that was something kind of “on paper.” So there’s the network, and if you want it, you can use it, but then again, maybe you don’t really use it or they don’t really get back to you. But I realized actually they get back to you. They’re very keen on helping. Of course, some of them are busy, some of them are CEOs or don’t have a lot time to dedicate, but most of them get back to you and are keen to help and provide you with all sorts of contacts, ideas, feedback. So that was another thing I used a lot, especially for the project in [Asia]. mbaMission: That’s great. Well, to finish up, what do you think more people should know about INSEAD that they probably don’t know? What message do you think people should get that they’re maybe not getting about the program? IA: I think people approach an MBA or apply to an MBA [program] as a process where okay, you do the GMAT and then you start thinking about the essays and then basically you apply to a top school, and all top schools are kind of similar. So I just need to decide whether I want to go to the U.S. or I want to go to Europe. But it is not like that. In fact, INSEAD offers things that other schools don’t offer. There is a big difference. It’s very international, a broader network. So if I get an MBA from Harvard, maybe it’s considered the best business school in the world, but if I then happen to be working in Asia, there is no way I can get the same network I can get with INSEAD. INSEAD is more international, very broad in terms of industries, different nationalities, different skill sets, expertise. And the other big thing that people don’t realize is that with INSEAD, you get in one year the same that you get in two years at another school. You think that in two years, you will get double what you get in one yearâ€"but that actually is not the case. You can probably get a little bit more from two years, but you cannot get double. You probably get a couple more electives. You get the chance maybe to think more about your future, but again, in the end, they are very similar. So that’s one thing I don’t think everyone realizes. Another interesting point is that for example, McKinsey [ Company]â€"and I say this because I know a lot of people want to go to McKinseyâ€"INSEAD  is the business school that provides the most graduates to McKinsey. So a lot of people think maybe, if I go to Stanford, I’ll get a better chance because it’s more known, but that’s not the case, because people in corporate, people in consulting, people in banking, they know INSEAD. Maybe if you stop someone on the street and you ask, “Do you know Stanford?” they say yes. “Do you know INSEAD?” and they have no clue. So the brand is not as strong that way, but when it comes to finding a job, the brand is as strong and is much broader because you can apply to jobs in Asia and Europe, U.S., South America, everywhere. mbaMission: I see your point. What kind of advice would you give to someone who is either already coming to INSEAD for sure or is targeting INSEAD as their top choice? What kind of insider advice would you give them on what to expect or do? IA: If they want to apply and they want a tip to increase their chances of getting into INSEAD, I would say INSEAD values a lot your international experience, so if you’ve always been in the same country, try to frame it in a way that you can show some international experience. They value a lot the fact that they’re international, and you will be put in a very international environment, and you need to be able to deal with it. So that’s one thing I recommend to people that want to get admission. Then another thing is you need to have three languages. So, people from the U.S. or from an English speaking country, I suggest that they start thinking about their entry and their exit language. You need to know three languages. Two have to be very good. The common one is Englishâ€"that’s a no brainer. And then the second one is typically your mother tongue, of course, but for someone from the U.S., it’s probably a bit tougher. So you need to know another language very well. It’s not enough to just be able to say something in that language. You need to know that language pretty well. mbaMission: So you need to know three coming in or two coming in? IA: Two coming in. So there is English, there is the entry language that you have to know very well and then there is an exit language, which is something you need on a basic to professional level. You need to be able to have a conversation. You need to be able to write down a text, but you don’t have to be as good [in it] as the other two. So, for these reasons, I recommend applicants to start polishing their languages, because I know people that still haven’t received their diploma because they are still trying to get the exit language. mbaMission: Does the school provide any classes or resources for people to help them with this aspect of the program? IA: Yeah. There are some classes for the most common languages. Another thing you can do isâ€"and this is another big advantage of such an international environmentâ€"let’s say there’s a student from Spain and he has a partner, and the partner could give you some teaching and you  pay them for individual classes or you organize a class of three or four people. You pay them a certain amount per hour, and you can get some help with the language and can develop your language. mbaMission: That’s great. Did you have anything else you specifically wanted to add? IA: Yes. In the end, I would recommend that everyone take an MBA at INSEAD, because my personal experience is that the learning that you get through class is important, but I don’t see that to differ a lot between schools. So that is sort of a given if you go to a top school, you get that levelâ€"maybe a bit better in some top U.S. schools, but in general, you’ve got more or less the same level, and the experience is kind of similar. You get a lot of fun, you get time to think about your future, so this you get, but the one thing that you don’t get anywhere else is the network and the international experience. That is something that you only get at INSEAD, and so my recommendation to everyone who’s thinking of taking an MBA is to go to INSEAD, because it’s an investment in your future. How to Use the Z.TEST Function in Excel

Hypothesis tests are one of the major topics in the area of inferential statistics. There are multiple steps to conduct a hypothesis test and many of these require statistical calculations. Statistical software, such as Excel, can be used to perform hypothesis tests. We will see how the Excel function Z.TEST tests hypotheses about an unknown population mean. Conditions and Assumptions We begin by stating the assumptions and conditions for this type of hypothesis test. For inference about the mean we must have the following simple conditions: The sample is a simple random sample.The sample is small in size relative to the population. Typically this means that the population size is more than 20 times the size of the sample.The variable being studied is normally distributed.The population standard deviation is known.The population mean is unknown. All of these conditions are unlikely to be met in practice. However, these simple conditions and the corresponding hypothesis test are sometimes encountered early in a statistics class. After learning the process of a hypothesis test, these conditions are relaxed in order to work in a more realistic setting. Structure of the Hypothesis Test The particular hypothesis test we consider has the following form: State the null and alternative hypotheses.Calculate the test statistic, which is a z-score.Calculate the p-value by using the normal distribution. In this case the p-value is the probability of obtaining at least as extreme as the observed test statistic, assuming the null hypothesis is true.Compare the p-value with the level of significance to determine whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis. We see that steps two and three are computationally intensive compared two steps one and four. The Z.TEST function will perform these calculations for us. Z.TEST Function The Z.TEST function does all of the calculations from steps two and three above. It does a majority of the number crunching for our test and returns a p-value. There are three arguments to enter into the function, each of which is separated by a comma. The following explains the three types of arguments for this function. The first argument for this function is an array of sample data. We must enter a range of cells that corresponds to the location of the sample data in our spreadsheet.The second argument is the value of  ÃŽ ¼ that we are testing in our hypotheses. So if our null hypothesis is H0:  ÃŽ ¼ 5, then we would enter a 5 for the second argument.The third argument is the value of the known population standard deviation. Excel treats this as an optional argument Notes and Warnings There are a few things that should be noted about this function: The p-value that is output from the function is one-sided. If we are conducting a two-sided test, then this value must be doubled.The one-sided p-value output from the function assumes that the sample mean is greater than the value of  ÃŽ ¼ we are testing against. If the sample mean is less than the value of the second argument, then we must subtract the output of the function from 1 to get the true p-value of our test.The final argument for the population standard deviation is optional. If this is not entered, then this value is automatically replaced in Excel’s calculations by the sample standard deviation. When this is done, theoretically a t-test should be used instead. Example We suppose that the following data are from a simple random sample of a normally distributed population of unknown mean and standard deviation of 3: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 8, 10, 12 With a 10% level of significance we wish to test the hypothesis that the sample data are from a population with mean greater than 5. More formally, we have the following hypotheses: H0: ÃŽ ¼ 5Ha:  ÃŽ ¼ 5 We use Z.TEST in Excel to find the p-value for this hypothesis test. Enter the data into a column in Excel. Suppose this is from cell A1 to A9Into another cell enter Z.TEST(A1:A9,5,3)The result is 0.41207.Since our p-value exceeds 10%, we fail to reject the null hypothesis. The Z.TEST function can be used for lower tailed tests and two tailed tests as well. However the result is not as automatic as it was in this case. Duke Ellington Duke Ellington Duke Ellington By the time of his passing, he was considered amongst the world's greatest composers and musicians. The French government honored him with their highest award, the Legion of Honor, while the government of the United States bestowed upon him the highest civil honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He played for the royalty and for the common people and by the end of his fifty-year career, he had played over 20,000 performances worldwide. He was the Duke, Duke Ellington Edward Kennedy Ellington was born into the world on April 28, 1899 in Washington, D.C. Duke's parents Daisy Kennedy Ellington and James Edward Ellington served as ideal role models for young Duke and taught him everything from proper table manners to an understanding of the emotional power of music. Duke's first piano lessons came around the age of seven or eight and appeared to not have that much lasting effect upon him. It seemed as if young Duke was more inclined to baseball at a youn g age. Duke got his first job selling peanuts at Washington Senator's baseball games. This was the first time Duke was placed as a "performer" for a crowd and had to first get over his stage fright. At the age of fourteen, Duke began sneaking into Frank Holliday's poolroom. His experiences from the poolroom taught him to appreciate the value in mixing with a wide range of people. As Duke's piano lessons faded into the past, Duke began to show a flare for the artistic. Duke attended Armstrong Manual Training School to study commercial art instead of an academically-oriented school. Duke began to seek out and listen to ragtime pianists in Washington and during the summers, where he and his mother vacationed in Philadelphia or Atlantic City. While vacationing in Asbury Park, Duke heard of a hot pianist named Harvey Brooks. At the end of his vacation Duke sought Harvey out in Philadelphia where Harvey showed Duke some pianistic tricks and shortcuts. Duke later recounted that, "When I go t home I had a real yearning to play. I hadn't been able to get off the ground before, but after hearing him I said to myself, 'Man you're going to have to do it.'" Thus the music career of Duke Ellington was born. Duke was taken under the wings of Oliver "Doc" Perry and Louis Brown who taught Duke how to read music and helped improve his overall piano playing skills. Duke found piano playing jobs at clubs and cafes throughout the Washington area. Three months shy of graduation, Duke dropped out of school and began his professional music career. In late 1917, Duke formed his first group: The Duke's Serenaders. Between 1918 and 1919, Duke made three significant steps towards independence. First, he moved out of his parents' home and into a home he bought for himself. Second, Duke became his own booking agent for his band. By doing so, Ellington's band was able to play throughout the Washington area and into Virginia for private society balls and embassy parties. Finally, Duke married Edna Thompson and on March 11, 1919, Mercer Kennedy Ellington was born. In 1923, Duke left the security that Washington offered him and moved to New York. Through the power of radio, listeners throughout New York had heard of Duke Ellington, making him quite a popular musician. It is also in that year that Duke made his first recording. Ellington and his renamed band, The Washingtonians, established themselves during the prohibition era by playing at places like the Exclusive Club, Connie's Inn, the Hollywood Club (Club Kentucky), Ciro's, the Plantation Club, and most importantly the Cotton Club. Thanks to the rise in radio receivers and the industry itself, Duke's band was broadcast across the nation live on "From the Cotton Club." The band's music along with their popularity spread rapidly. In 1928, Ellington and Irving Mills signed an agreement in which Mills produced and published Ellington's music. Recording companies like Brunswick, Columbia, and Victor came calling. The Sex Ratios Of India Indias growth story has been incredible. The stock markets are doing well. Corporate India is optimistic about India being able to sustain the current growth rate for a considerable period of time. Indian companies are making their presence felt through cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Services and manufacturing sectors are booming. Growth in agriculture may be sluggish as compared to the other sectors, it growing nonetheless. Urban India believes that India is going to surpass the United States of America in a span of fifteen years. However, fundamental problems like malnutrition and corruption still plague our country. But the urban, educated, middle class are not affected by malnutrition and have learnt to live with corruption. There is one problem besides corruption and malnutrition; which is prevalent across all sections of the society and all of them all guilty participants in making this problem a widespread one. The urban, educated, middle class; despite being educated, do not seem to realise the long term effects of their actions. This problem, if unchecked, has the potential to apply the brakes on Indias growth. The birth of a boy child is celebrated, while the birth of a girl child is, well; tolerated. And sometimes, the girl child is killed even before she is born. Sex ratio is the number females in a geographic region per 1000 males. Most developed economies of the world (except China) have healthy sex ratios, with more number of females than males 1. A sex ratio 952 females per 1000 males is considered healthy. The national average as per the 2001 census is 933. Delhi has a modest 915 according estimates in the year 2009 2. As per the 2001 census, Rajasthan averages 922, while Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh average 964 and 978 respectively. Kerala being the most literate state also has the healthiest sex ratio of 1058 per 1000 males 3. However states like Punjab has a dismal sex ratio of 795 per 1000 males, which is alarming 4. The state of Maharashtra too is a cause for concern. With more working women being visible in Maharashtra, there is a misconception that Maharashtra is better off, but facts state otherwise. The juvenile sex ratio is 869 girls to 1000 boys, as on March 2010 11. If India has to continue on the growth path, the burgeoning menace of female foeticide cannot be ignored. But is the common man on the road concerned? No. Why? For one, the common man believes that it is not his problem; but of the feminists, the NGOs, the government, and so on. For another, he believes that the problem is societal, not personal; and hence it cannot affect him. (The common man I am talking about is a reference to the numerous people I have met so far in my life. Gender imbalance is the least of their problems.) Is the problem societal? Crime against women is on the rise and the increasing imbalance between males and females will aggravate it 5. A survey conducted by Jagori, based in Delhi concluded that women face harassment in public places on a continuous basis 6. Since most of the cases of harassment go unreported, the awareness of the magnitude of the menace is abysmally low. Women craving for sons, who have never faced harassment should realise that even they can be vulnerable. Should men care? States like Punjab and Haryana are facing a very grave situation. Due to their heavily skewed sex ratios, there are not enough brides for the grooms within the community. A study notes that 20% men may remain unmarried 6. Another study notes that marriage has beneficial effects on health and survival, with men reaping maximum benefits. Therefore, men run the risk of shorter life expectancy 7. Why is that we do not want daughters? Daughters have always been considered as paraya dhan. Parents consider having a daughter as an expense, a luxury they cannot afford. Taking care of her, educating her, and marrying her off to a suitor, all require huge sums of money. Any property she inherits or assets that she creates go the family she marries into. Families who own large pieces of land have owned such lands for generations. Such families would always want their first child to be male for the purpose of inheritance and keeping the land within the family. Even today marrying off a daughter is considered the biggest responsibility a parent can possibly have. Fears for her sexual safety and security make parents to marry off their daughter as early as possible. Why is that we want sons? The answer is dowry. Though the practice of dowry is made illegal in 1961, it is an open secret that the practice is prevalent even in 2010. We have men in the south proudly telling each other that they have a market value in the marriage market 9. There are men among the rural folk who consider getting married simply to rake in dowry and use it to fund their businesses. Dowry in todays world has taken many convenient forms like a fully furnished apartment, high-end electronics, a four-wheeled vehicle, and huge sums of money. The trend of son preference cuts across socio-economic factors like caste and economic status 6. As a result, dowry related harassment is rising. Other than financial concerns, there are other benefits in having sons. India is a patrilineal society. Sons continue the family lineage (gotra), while daughters lose their gotra of birth and join the lineage of their husbands. This essentially means that sons are the only legitimate descendan ts in the system. Therefore, sons are a source of prestige for a family. As a consequence of these deep seated norms, girl children under the age of 5 face severe neglect in terms of nutrition, immunisation, and clothing. They also face discrimination with regard to schooling. Sometimes female infants are killed within a few days of their birth. With the advent of technology, the trend of sex selective abortion or female foeticide has risen to unprecedented levels. Thirty years ago, these methods were not known. The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act (PNDT) Act prohibits doctors and clinics from using pre-natal diagnostic techniques, such as scans, to determine the sex of a foetus. First offenders would face a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 and repeat offenders would risk a five-year imprisonment and a 50,000 fine. The act also prohibits any advertising for diagnosis facilities. The act notwithstanding, the awareness of sex selective abortions were popularised with the mushrooming o f unregistered, illegal, small clinics by advertising the benefits of sex selective abortions through messages like It is better to pay a small amount today for a sex-selective abortion than a larger amount later for your daughters dowry. The government, on its own, has not been effective in enforcing the act. The government has a myopic take on the issue. Since this issue cannot be treated as a plank to garner votes, the long term after effects of sustained gender imbalances on demography are not being considered seriously 10. All hope is not lost. Many NGOs have launched sting operations, such as luring doctors into revealing the sex of a foetus. While often receiving wide publicity, these initiatives are proving somewhat less effective for legal reasons, as proof of criminal wrongdoing is often difficult to establish. But they nonetheless have had an unmistakeable impact on clinic operators in some areas, who have come to realise that the Act can be implemented by non-official entities. Other than stings, NGOs have been also been instrumental in spreading awareness through campaigns like Save our daughters, Laadli 1 million signature campaign, FADA movement by Deepalaya, Jatha campaign by Jagruti, and recently, the programme Santulan by the Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan, to name a few. Notwithstanding these initiatives, at a personal level, we must spread awareness of the issue. A growing India not only needs to debate on fiscal deficit and current account deficits but also on the daughter deficit. The issue needs to be talked about more often to make it relevant all the time. Changing the mindsets of a billion people will not happen overnight. The youth and newly wed couples need to be sensitised about the issue. I advocate certain fundamental changes in the way we think to bring about the change. The urban, educated, middle class can be targeted first with these ideas. After there is a considerable change in the mindset of the middle class, these ideas can be trickled down to the grassroots. The primary problems of lineage, inheritance, and girls being treated as paraya dhan need to be addressed. The Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005 gives women equal rights of inheritance of land and property. This empowers the women economically and treats daughters as equal financial providers. Second, sons are no more providing for the parents during their old age. Sons are moving out of their ancestral homes, are staying away from their parents and are starting families of their own. Parents of sons are also not assured of constant personal care from their sons in their old age. Now in such a context, it does not matter if the parents have sons or daughters: they are going to stay away anyway due to a variety of reasons and they will be playing roughly equal roles when their parents need them. Third, the concept of a patrilineal society needs to be done away with. The very notion that a daughter would be part of another family after marriage should be erased. Daughters, not jus t sons, can also be considered as legitimate descendants. The children of the daughter need not be thought of as children of another family. In the United States of America, a child can take the surname of either parent. Though it is not a norm here in India, the government is not stopping us from doing so. Now with respect to dowry, young men need to be sensitised about the issue. They need to be told that the fact that they are proud to have a market value is detestable. They need to be taught that it is unethical to think of dowry as an opportunity for instant money. Traditionally, parents of the girl perform her wedding and bear all the expenses. This has to change. Parents of the boy should also shoulder the burden of performing the wedding and share the expenses with the parents of the girl; it is after all the wedding of their son, what is the shame in bearing the expenses of their own sons wedding? Better still, the boy and the girl should be made accountable for the expense s incurred. It their own wedding, why make their parents shoulder the entire responsibility for the expenditure? The fundamental assumptions which would make these changes work are that the urban, educated middle class are liberal in their mindsets, love their sons and daughters roughly equally, and have inflated egos. By hitting on their egos, by enquiring about their capability to fund their own sons wedding, these changes can be driven home. It would too naive to think that by making these changes, we would quickly achieve a healthier sex ratio. These changes are easier said than done, because they are too radical. Even the urban, educated, middle class would find it difficult to digest and assimilate these changes because the existing norms have been around for centuries. Small successes should be celebrated and propagated. It would take years for these changes to provide material results. Eventually, when these changes produce results, one cannot rest because these changes will still have to trickle down among the rural and poorer sections of the society. For India to be an economic superpower, all sections of the society should have a healthy sex ratio within their communities. It is a long and arduous journey ahead. Adult learners require the learning to be relevant, are highly motivated, need active involvement in the learning process, a variety of learning experiences, positive feedback, need to be recognized as individuals with unique experiences, to maintain their self-esteem. A positive learning environment requires the involvement of learners – to ask questions and feedback, encourage discussions, group and individual activities, group discussions, visual aids, role plays. The effective trainer helps to create the positive learning environment when using a variety of techniques for providing positive feedback. To provide positive feedback is to give verbal praise, to use positive responses during questioning, recognize appropriate skills. Be sure to treat the participants as individuals when using participant names, to involve all participants as often as possible, to treat participants with respect, to allow participants to share information with others, to maintain the self-esteem of learners with reinforcing practices and beliefs embodied in the activity, providing corrective feedback in an appropriate manner, providing training that adds to their sense of competence and self-esteem, recognizing participants accomplishments. Some theorize that this incident was the cause for his hatred of the British, but this cannot be confirmed. After the war, Jackson along with his one surviving brother, contracted smallpox in a war camp prison. Jackson survived, unfortunately his brother did not. Crawford, Henry Clay, and John Quincy Adams. Elected on March 4th of 1826, he served till 1837. While in office, he oversaw multiple projects. His main goal had to deal with the indian Removal Act. Which ordered the removal of thousands of Cherokee indians across the Trail of Tears to there reservations. They had to cross over nine different states for a total of 2,200 miles . He was the first democrat elected president. He is considered one of the first presidents that was for the people and wanted to represent them. He was the leader of the executive branch,and was known to rule with a iron fist. He was known as the first Tennessee man to be elected into the house of representatives. There was one known assassination attempt on him, January 30, 1835 by the house painter Richard Lawrence. There were tw o shots fired, neither shot went off, this gave Jackson a chance to beat him over the head with his cane. The Trail of Tears In 1830 congress was pressuring Jackson to pass legislation on removal of Native Cherokee indians in Georgia, which was land allocated to them due to the treaty signed in 1791. The treaty was named the Hopewell Treaty. This all changes at the discovery of gold and settlement purposed by white men. Georgia tried to reclaim the land but was taken to supreme court and ruled in favor of the Cherokee people. Then on May 28, 1830, Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act to force Native Indians to move to unsettled lands just west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their lands. This land persided in the states border. The bank war and jacksons involvement This dispute began with the his campaign in 1833 to eradicate the Second Bank of America. This dispute went on throughout his presidency, as Jackson had soon won national support for his cause. Where as in 1832, Jackson vetoed a bill that called for the early renewal for the second banks charter. He was not fond of the banking system, and acted harshly to reduce the banks economical powers. He had opposition form fellow cabinet members and went through two secretaries of treasury until he got what he wanted. On October 1st 1833, he announced that the federal funds would not be deposited into the second bank but rather place them in various state banks. The president of the second bank had ideas around jacksons genius plan, he decided to call back loans and contracting credit. In the end, the second banks charter ended up expiring in 1836 and Jackson official won the bank war. Abolishment and the American System The American System and economic policy lasted from 1816 to 1828. This called for certain tariffs on imported goods, which limited federal funding for certain infrastructure. This american system idea had success, but still was a flaw with internal conflicts. Abolishment of Slavery in the South was mostly about the treatment of slaves and their rights. Southern states were against abolishment and were fully dependent on slave labor, unlike the northern states. The first priority of Jacksons was to preserve the state of union before his conflicts with opposing slavery. Life after presidency After his two terms in office in 1829 to 1837, Jackson was was looking forward to having a quiet retirement from the political view. Though, even after his two terms were up his political views and stances carried on throughout Martin Van Burens terms for office. He had say in the annexation of texas and abolishment of slavery. Although his term was long over, his work did get completed by political followers in office. This all stopped when William Henry Harrison took office on March 4 ,1841. At last, his age and also illness were bearing down on him. His health has been declining for many years, and he eventually died from natural causes on June 8th, 1845. He passed away at his final resting place and home at the Hermitage. The Hermitage was his house in Nashville, Tennessee. It is now a National Museum where you can go in and learn all the interesting facts about Andrew Jackson and his life. Jacksons end result In conclusion, the life line of Andrew Jackson was a rough and challenging time. He went through many difficult times as a child. He went into the militia at a young age and then eventually went back to school to finish his education. He also had some very great accomplishments. Not just as President, but even when he had success an attorney. After time he finished his education and created his own private practice of law. He then went on to getting married and having 10 children. All while going through political battles over elections and with Congress.He went on to being in the election to run for The President of the United States. He was up against four candidates and won. Not to mention that when paper currency came along from all of these efforts he got his place on the U.S. 2 dollar bill.
